At Mountain View, we are Dragons, and Dragons always have the best view. We value each other. We always work hard to improve. We empower each other, and we always win by working together. We serve Pre-K through fifth grade students, and right now we have about 507 students. So, we are growing. We are the second largest Elementary School in Wilkes County Schools. We normally have about 18 children per classroom. Our upper grades are a little bit bigger than that. Fourth grade, I think we have around 22, and fifth grade we have about 26 to 28 students in a classroom. We are very excited about our new reading curriculum called Wit and Wisdom. We really spend a big portion of the day working on reading skills, and writing skills, and comprehending what we read, and focusing that into what we're writing about. We also have a fairly new math curriculum called HMH to focus on those math skills. Teachers at Mountain View Elementary inspire students to do well and motivate them to work hard to keep their academic goals on track. They have this deep understanding of subject matter and teach material in a way to make students want to learn more. No matter what we're doing, I try to apply it to the real world, so we do a lot of problem-based projects. Right now we're doing multiplication, so we're doing a camping project. My classroom is set up - they work with a different group of students every day, so that gives them an opportunity to learn how to work with different people and to share ideas. And, they are always collaborating and helping each other. We start off whole group, but most of what we do, they're working in their teams. We do a lot of team challenges and working in small groups. Mountain View Elementary begins their morning with a school-wide Dragon meeting time where students have the opportunity to speak with classmates, friends, and school staff in a supportive and nurture environment. Ten minutes every morning is just a time to share, and talk, and reflect, and to set goals for the day. We really try to have those social emotional learning times together, and it really helps build class community and just collaborativeness among the classroom. Mountain View Elementary is a Blue Ribbon School for PBIS which stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. The goal of PBIS is it to create a positive school climate that students learn and grow in. Students get privileges for working hard to keep their behaviors positive. We also have rewards that we do and special things with PBIS. We have dances and socials to try to celebrate good behavior. We like to involve the community with that as well. Several, actually, around us that will help sponsor different things that we need. They help provide food for our food bags and food bank that we have outside, and they're always asking, "What are the classroom needs?" And, if we need tissues, they'll bring tissues. If we need something else, they will donate those items. Mountain View Elementary offers many extracurricular activities for students to further enrich their emotional and social skills and discover new interests outside the classroom. We do have Girls on the Run. We also have YMCA After-School program. We do Science Olympiad with our older students, and we also have Quiz Bowl. And, we have Drama Club. We always do a 2-day drama production at the Stone Center in the spring, and then we also try to have lots of family events. We have Parent Nights. We have a big Fall Festival that we do each year. We try to do something in the spring as well. We just really want our families to always feel like they're welcome on our campus. Communication with parents is very important. We have to be a supportive team for their student's success. Parents can send me messages. We send pictures of things that are going on in our classroom, celebrations that we have, birthdays, and to keep parents informed of what's going on. A lot of what we do as a team is thinking ahead to set them up for success when they go to middle school. We set goals, and we celebrate when they meet their goals, and we try to grow every day to get better. Welcome to Mountain View Elementary School. We're glad you're here!
